As bells rang throughout Somerset County in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, September 11, 2003, NBC and First Call UPLinks worked together to provide live coverage of the second anniversary memorial service for Flight 93. This coverage was provided for viewing on The Today Show, MSNBC, and NBC Nightly News. NBC staff included Correspondent Chris Jansing, coordinating producer, Terry Pickard, and producer, Stephanie Himango.

Secretary of the Interior, Gale Norton, swore in the Flight 93 National Memorial Federal Advisory Commission, which officially began the formal planning of the Flight 93 National Memorial as a unit of the National Park System.

An honorary Flight 93 American flag, which is hand-made special every year, was hung in remembrance of the brave victims and their families. "America the Beautiful" and "God Bless the USA" were sang after a bell tolled 40 times in honor of each of the crew and passengers. Alice Hoglan, whose son, Mark Bingham, attempted to overthrow the hijackers, was one of the interviewed family members.

Barbara Black, Curator of the Somerset Historical Society, walked us through the storage site where hundreds of thousands of items have been left by visitors from across the country. These mementos include a United Airlines stewardess uniform to military medals to pictures drawn by children.
